The best time to visit Seceda

The Seceda cable car runs in summer 2026 from 22 May to 2 November, daily from 8:30 to 17:30. September and October are calmer than July and August, and the larches turn gold in October. In winter the lift runs from early December to early April for skiers and non-skiers.

The Seceda ridge looks different in every season. Early summer brings fresh green meadows, high summer brings the longest days and the most visitors, autumn brings gold larches and calmer paths, and winter turns the ridge into a ski area with a long run down to Ortisei.

This guide sets out the 2026 dates, the best time of day, and what to expect in each season. Because ascents in summer 2026 are sold in fixed, non-refundable 30-minute time slots, timing matters more than before. Read the guide to Seceda cable car tickets for the booking rules.

Quick answer

The best time to visit Seceda is an early morning slot on a weekday in June, September or October. The lift runs from 22 May to 2 November 2026, daily from 8:30 to 17:30, so it is open in September and October. In winter the cable car runs from early December to early April for skiers and non-skiers.

When is the best time to visit Seceda?

For most visitors, an early morning slot on a weekday in June, September or October gives the best mix of open lifts, good light and fewer people.

July and August have the longest days and the most reliable access to every hut, but they are also the busiest months. June offers fresh green meadows. September and October are calmer, and in October the larches below the ridge turn gold. The lift season ends on 2 November 2026, and Seceda AG and Val Gardena describe the period until early to mid November as ideal for autumn hikes.

Within any month, the time of day matters as much as the date. The first time slots after the 8:30 opening put you on the ridge before most day visitors arrive. The table below sums up the year.

When is the Seceda cable car open in 2026?

In summer, from 22 May to 2 November 2026, daily from 8:30 to 17:30, on both sections. In winter, from early December to early April.

Both sections, Ortisei to Furnes and Furnes to Seceda, run on the same summer dates. Ascents are sold online at seceda.it in 30-minute time slots, and tickets are neither refundable nor changeable. The Col Raiser gondola from Santa Cristina, an alternative way to the area, runs from 22 May to 1 November 2026.

The Fermeda chairlift is an exception: seceda.it lists it as currently closed in summer 2026, while valgardena.it lists 20 June to 20 September 2026. Check before you rely on it.

Is the Seceda cable car open in September and October?

Yes. The summer season runs until 2 November 2026, so the lift is open through September and October, when the larches turn gold.

September and October are many walkers' favourite months at Seceda. The summer crowds thin out, the air is often clear, and in October the larch trees on the lower slopes turn gold against the grey rock of the Odle group. Seceda AG and Val Gardena describe the season until early or mid November as ideal for autumn hikes.

  • Shorter days: the lift still closes at 17:30, but the light fades earlier, so plan longer walks in the morning.
  • Colder mornings: bring a warm layer and gloves for the ridge at about 2,500 m.
  • Huts: some huts may close earlier than the lift; check before you plan lunch.

Is it better to visit Seceda in the morning or the afternoon?

The morning, for most visitors. Early slots after the 8:30 opening are quieter and leave time for longer walks before the 17:30 closing.

An early slot has three advantages. The ridge is calmer before most day visitors arrive. The light on the Odle peaks is soft. And you have the whole day for a longer walk, such as the Rifugio Firenze circuit, which one hiking blog measures at about 3 h 15 min.

The afternoon has its own appeal: warm light on the meadows and the chance of alpenglow near closing time. The risk is time. With the lift closing at 17:30, an afternoon slot leaves little margin for anything beyond the short walk to the viewpoint. Mountain weather can also build in the afternoon, so watch the forecast.

Can you see the sunset from Seceda?

Possibly, but only if it falls before the lift closes. The lift closes at 17:30, so check the timetable for the last ascent and descent before planning for alpenglow.

Alpenglow, when the Odle peaks turn pink in the last light, is one of the most photographed sights in Val Gardena. On Seceda, the timing depends on the lift. In summer 2026 the lift runs until 17:30, so for much of the season sunset comes after the last ride down. Check the timetable at seceda.it for the last ascent and the last descent before you plan an evening on the ridge.

If you plan to stay later and walk down, choose a route you know, carry a headlamp and warm clothes, and allow for a long descent. The guide on Seceda without the cable car describes the routes down.

Can you visit Seceda in winter?

Yes. The cable car runs from early December to early April for skiers and non-skiers. Bring microspikes if you walk on the snowy ridge.

In winter Seceda is part of the ski area of Val Gardena. One winter guide describes La Longia, a 10.5 km red ski run that leads from the Seceda area down Val d'Anna to Ortisei. Non-skiers can also ride the lift to see the snowy ridge and the Odle peaks.

  • Microspikes: paths on the ridge can be icy; spikes give grip on packed snow.
  • Stay off the pistes on foot unless a path is marked for walkers.
  • Short days: plan to be back at the lift well before closing.
  • Check the winter timetable at seceda.it; the summer time-slot rules described in this guide apply to summer 2026.

What is Seceda like in spring?

The area becomes accessible from mid-May, and the summer lift season starts on 22 May 2026. Expect fresh meadows and possible snow on shaded paths.

Seceda AG and Val Gardena describe the area as accessible from mid-May. Early in the season the meadows turn green, and the ridge is usually quieter than in high summer. Snow can remain on north-facing slopes and shaded paths, so check trail conditions before you set out and bring shoes with good grip.

Some huts may open later than the lift. If lunch at a hut is part of your plan, check opening dates locally.

How can I get good photos at Seceda?

Go early or late in the day for soft light, stay on the marked paths, and consider a private photo session in Val Gardena.

The famous photo spot on the ridge is on private land, and since 2025 local farmers charge a fee there; in 2026 the turnstile was reinstalled on 12 June, with a second pay point from 14 July. You do not pay twice. Many strong images are possible from the public paths as well, and the meadows are hay fields, so keep off the grass.

The private photo session in Val Gardena lasts 1 hour for up to 6 people, with the spot discussed in advance. The listing states that it includes 30 edited photos in an online gallery and an outfit and posing guide, and that cable cars, transport and RAW files are not included. It is offered in English, German and Russian, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before, and is not suitable for babies or toddlers.
